T.J. Maxx will permanently close its three-story store at 360 Newbury St. by Jan. 3, 2026, and plans to lay off 117 employees on Jan. 5. The closure will leave a large vacancy at the corner of Newbury Street and Massachusetts Avenue. A Worker Adjustment and Retraining Act notice says affected employees are not union-represented and may transfer to other locations. The company cited real estate strategy adjustments and emphasized Boston remains an important market and home to its headquarters. TJX reported fiscal year net sales of $56.4 billion, a 4% increase, and opened its 5,000th store.
