'In harm's way': Calif. hikers dodge bullets whizzing past popular trail
"For a group of California hikers, a fall excursion into the Sierra Nevada turned into a terrifying experience last week when they heard multiple gunshots and experienced bullets whizzing by. At 1:50 p.m. on Friday, Mono County Dispatch received multiple calls from hikers on the Parker Lake Trail, near June Lake in the Sierra Nevada, the Mono County Sheriff's Office reported. The hikers reported shots fired in their vicinity. The dispatcher could hear the sound of gunshots on the phone call."
"North of the trail, deputies found three people from Southern California who were target shooting, according to the sheriff's office. The shooters stopped firing their weapons and complied with the deputies' orders. All three shooters were arrested and booked into Mono County Jail for felony charges of "Willful Discharge of a Firearm in a Grossly Negligent Manner." No injuries were reported. However, the hikers "were definitely in harm's way and justifiably frightened," the sheriff's office said in a statement."
