Cannabis Access for Veterans: Health, Dignity, and Justice | stupidDOPE | Est. 2008
"Across the United States, more than 18 million military veterans live with the lasting effects of service. For many, combat did not end when they returned home. The scars of war-whether in the form of physical injuries, chronic pain, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), traumatic brain injury (TBI), or invisible mental health struggles-are daily realities. Yet despite decades of evidence supporting cannabis as a therapeutic tool, America's veterans still face barriers to safe and consistent access."
"Chronic Pain and Physical Injuries Combat injuries and service-related wear leave many veterans battling lifelong pain. Opioids have been the traditional prescription, but the opioid crisis has shown how devastating dependency can be. Cannabis, particularly strains rich in THC and CBD, has been shown to provide pain relief with far fewer long-term risks. Traumatic Brain Injury and Neurological Disorders TBI, often called the "signature injury" of modern conflicts, affects countless veterans. Emerging studies suggest cannabinoids may play a role in neuroprotection and in managing symptoms such as headaches, mood swings, and cognitive impairment."
More than 18 million U.S. military veterans live with lasting physical and mental effects of service. Combat-related consequences include physical injuries, chronic pain, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), traumatic brain injury (TBI), and other invisible mental-health struggles. Decades of evidence indicate cannabis can serve as a therapeutic tool for symptoms such as insomnia, hypervigilance, chronic pain, and neurological impairment. Veterans report using cannabis for calm, sleep regulation, and pain relief with fewer risks than opioids or some pharmaceuticals. Barriers to safe, consistent access persist, prompting a movement advocating for veteran access to therapeutic cannabis.
