Some 182,000 Kurds living in Iraqi Kurdistan were killed in 1988 by chemical weapons launched by Saddam Hussein's regime in a series of attacks known as the Anfal campaign. That campaign included chemical attacks on Halabja, a village on the Iraq-Iran border, and other communities. Five thousand people are estimated to have died in Halabja. They were the victims of sarin and VX nerve agents, and mustard gas.

When Rahmanullah Lakanwal came to the U.S. from Afghanistan he appeared lively and full of hope, but over the course of years, he slipped into isolation and was prone to taking cross country drives without telling his family, according to a volunteer who worked closely with his family. Lakanwal, an Afghan national, is accused of shooting two National Guard soldiers on November 26. One of those soldiers, 20-year-old Sarah Beckstrom, died from her wounds.
A woman who claimed she suffered post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a result of a rear-ending car collision has been awarded €90,000 by the High Court. Katarzyna Sykula, a mother of one who was living in Carlow town at the time of the accident and later in Tullow, Co Carlow, was the subject of what a judge called "a relatively minor rear-ending" by another car near a traffic light in Finglas, Dublin, on December 9, 2017.

The small country in the Caucasus, with a population of about 3 million, was defeated in the 2020 war with Azerbaijan over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region. Still, many of the ethnic Armenians who lived in the region stayed. In the years that followed, Armenia saw a series of bloody border clashes with Azerbaijan. Then, in September 2023, Azerbaijan seized full control of Nagorno-Karabakh, leading a mass exodus of more than 100,000 Armenians, who at that point had survived a nine-month blockade and war.
