At Ulla Johnson's New Store, Double-Fringed Sofa and Hand-Carved Table Set the Bohemian Chic Scene
"After fashion designer Ulla Johnson launched her eponymous label in 1999, the brand swiftly became synonymous with an elegant slant of downtown bohemian chic. In the decades since, its reputation has continued to expand into a global retailer known for impeccable finishing, signature silhouettes, and devotion to perfection down to the smallest details. That is as much the case for her celebrated collections as it is for her standalone shops, which expanded to include a new location on Madison Avenue this month."
"Together, Johnson and the Valle de Valle team hand-selected the stone slabs seen throughout the store: travonyx in the windows, onyx rose beneath the racks, and fusion quartzite across the thresholds. The walls in the front room feature hand-plasterwork with Color Atelier limewash that appears to glow, as do the accessory niches lined with gold brick wall covering by Gracie New York, an element that reappears on the ceilings of the boudoir. Decorative trimmings were crafted by legendary textile maker Passementerie Verrier."
Ulla Johnson launched her eponymous label in 1999 and built a reputation for downtown bohemian chic, impeccable finishing, and signature silhouettes. The brand expanded into a global retailer with standalone boutiques, most recently a Madison Avenue location conceived as a Manhattan homecoming. Studio Valle de Valle collaborated with Johnson to design a gem-box boutique that references the neighborhood's architectural history and nearby cultural institutions. The designers prioritized natural materials and craft, hand-selecting travonyx, onyx rose, and fusion quartzite; applying hand-plasterwork with Color Atelier limewash; lining niches with Gracie New York gold brick; and commissioning Passementerie Verrier for decorative trimmings.
