The live-action adaptation of Lilo & Stitch pays tribute to the beloved original by filming entirely on location in Hawaii, specifically Oahu. Director Dean Fleischer Camp emphasized the importance of authenticity, citing that the vibrant culture and scenery of Hawaii are irreplaceable. Although the animated original is set in Kaua'i, logistics necessitated filming in Oahu, which offered necessary infrastructure. The film aims to recreate the whimsical and heartfelt spirit of the original while portraying the stunning beauty of Hawaiian landscapes, integral to the story of 'ohana and connection.
We all felt like, we definitely needed to shoot 100 per cent of it in Hawaii. There's just not really a substitute for it.
The original takes place in Kaua'i, and for kind of boring logistical reasons, that was deemed impossible, but Oahu had all of the infrastructure needed.
