"I saw it at the AFI in the early 1990s. It's one of those Kurosawa films that is a must-see. People talk about Seven Samurai, Yojimbo and Ran, but High and Low is one of my favorites. I thought it was amazing how the man could, as a filmmaker, take us into this samurai world but then also do this contemporary drama in an urban setting and be just as impactful a storyteller."
"That grueling feat was predicated on the fact that a triumvirate of Libatique's most frequent collaborators came calling: Spike Lee with Highest 2 Lowest (briefly in theaters, now on Apple TV+), Darren Aronofsky with Caught Stealing (now in theaters) and Bradley Cooper with Is This Thing On? (scheduled for release at the end of the year, premiering shortly at NYFF)."
In November 2023 cinematographer Matthew Libatique entered a prolific period, shooting three films nearly back-to-back. The projects reunited him with frequent collaborators: Spike Lee's Highest 2 Lowest (brief theatrical run, now on Apple TV+), Darren Aronofsky's Caught Stealing (in theaters), and Bradley Cooper's Is This Thing On? (set for year-end release and premiering at NYFF). Highest 2 Lowest transposes Akira Kurosawa's 1963 High and Low to New York, casting Denzel Washington as a record-label impresario whose driver's son is mistakenly kidnapped for a $17.5 million ransom. Libatique described High and Low as a formative, must-see Kurosawa film.
