Starbucks will lay off 900 workers and close coffee shops across the country, including dozens in New York City, some of which are unionized. The company conducted a review of its North America coffeehouses with the stated goal that every location deliver a warm and welcoming space. The review identified stores where the physical environment could not meet customer and partner expectations or where there was no viable path to financial performance, and those locations were slated for closure. A public Google document lists affected stores spanning Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn.
