""It's uncommon to find a company that operates in a similar market segment, that is geographically close and is open to making an ownership transition," Volkema told Daily Coffee News. "Those factors lined up, so we went for it, despite the challenges our industry faces.""

Schuil Coffee Company acquired Leelanau Coffee Roasting Co., including Leelanau's Glen Arbor cafe and the Maple City roasting facility. Schuil hired all 25 Leelanau employees, bringing the combined company to about 80 employees and encompassing the Sparrows Coffee and Joven Coffee brands. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. Schuil and Leelanau share geographic market overlap and some coffee sourcing through common importer connections. Both brands have operated in specialty coffee for over three decades. Leelanau has served Glen Arbor since 1993 and expanded its roastery nearly ten years ago with two Sivetz fluid‑bed roasters. Schuil plans to maintain Leelanau offerings and explore packaging and website refresh within a year.
