Inside the New Brooklyn Restaurant Mixing Malaysian, Caribbean, and Italian Flavors
"Owner Chris Low says he hadn't planned to be "mega-involved," but once he found himself there far more than expected, "we owed it to ourselves to try something that's fully fleshed out that isn't just a happy accident.""
""It's everything that I wanted to be able to do at Chicken House," he tells Eater."
""All those cuisines bleed into [Kelang's] menu in one way or another," he says."
Hainan Chicken House opened in Sunset Park in 2023 offering Malaysian-style Hainan chicken served with sticky rice balls and rotating specials. Owner Chris Low became more involved than planned and sought to create a more fully realized concept. Kelang opened in Greenpoint at 715 Manhattan Avenue near Norman Avenue in early December as a follow-up that expands on those aims. The menu draws from Klang's distinct food culture, emphasizing liberal use of dark soy in dishes like bak kut teh and a local char kway teow variation. The restaurant blends Malaysian roots with Caribbean and Italian American touches from Low's Brooklyn upbringing.
