Morgenstern's Will Close Its West Houston Street Shop
"I have a very good relationship with my landlord .... The timing is the right time for all parties,"
"I love making ice cream and if all goes well, I will keep doing it,"
"Those two sum up the identity of Morgenstern's very well: an American classic and something truly unexpected."
"Morgenstern's exists because people in New York are willing to come out and rain or shine and eat a scoop of our ice cream. It's a special thing here."
Morgenstern's Manhattan flagship at 88 West Houston Street will close on Sunday, October 12. Owner Nick Morgenstern cites lease and property management complications tied to pandemic-era concessions. Morgenstern opened his first shop in 2014 on the Lower East Side and launched the Houston Street flagship in 2018, expanding to over 80 flavors. The business experimented with boozy sundaes, cocktails, and burgers alongside ice cream. Operations will continue at Morgenstern's Bananas (2 Rivington Street) and through an online business selling pints, cakes, and merchandise. Final service will highlight best-selling flavors like cookies and cream and pineapple salted egg yolk.
