First charter jet brings French nationals home from Middle East
"We never thought this would happen. An alarm sounded in the middle of the night telling us not to stay near the windows. We went down to the basement. When I boarded the repatriation flight, I felt as if I were fleeing danger, even though it's a relatively safe country."
"It was a complex process, with constant uncertainty because we are in a very fluid situation, with airspace opening and closing and the situation changing from hour to hour."
A charter flight carrying French nationals stranded in the Middle East landed at Charles de Gaulle airport early Wednesday, marking the beginning of France's repatriation efforts. The regional conflict triggered by US-Israeli strikes on Iran has left approximately 400,000 French nationals scattered across 15 countries. The aircraft, chartered by Air France, departed from Muscat, Oman on Tuesday evening and transported airline staff, families, young children, and pregnant women. Government officials described the operation as complex due to constantly changing airspace conditions and fluid security situations. Additional repatriation flights were scheduled for Wednesday from the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, and Israel to bring back vulnerable French citizens.
