San Jose bike shop donates bicycles for annual toy drive - San Jose Spotlight
"A bike is magic. It's freedom. It's the wind in your hair,"
"It's a small taste of being an adult to have independent transportation. This could change a person's life ... and make all the difference."
"It's a very meaningful program,"
"We give out bikes because how many of us don't have core memories of learning how to ride a bike? And we know bikes are expensive. I get to see the parents walk out with big smiles, and they're overjoyed that they get to take a bike home to give to their children."
Sacred Heart Community Service is conducting its annual holiday toy drive through Friday, partnering with Good Karma Bikes to distribute hundreds of bicycles, books, and toys to local children. Good Karma Bikes has performed safety checks for 14 years and is donating 100 bicycles this year. The toy drive serves up to 1,400 families, and raffle winners may choose a bicycle and helmet. Good Karma Bikes previously provided bicycles to Berryessa Union School District students and plans to aid San Jose Unified students to improve school attendance and mobility. The drive currently lacks about 3,000 toys and has roughly 300 bicycles for 5,000 children. Organizers request new, unwrapped gifts or monetary donations and note a particular need for teen gifts.
