Maja T., a non-binary activist from Germany, faces inhumane prison conditions in Hungary where they are subject to relentless surveillance and restrictions. After being extradited from Germany in June 2024, they became increasingly concerned about the lack of fair trial prospects under Hungary's authoritarian regime. The activist began a hunger strike to advocate for their return to Germany, as Hungary has recently implemented laws marginalizing LGBTQ+ individuals. T. criticized the state for its oppressive environment, particularly aimed at gender and sexual minorities, while facing serious charges related to a violent incident during a neo-Nazi march.
I can no longer endure the prison conditions in Hungary. My cell was under round-the-clock video surveillance for over three months. I always had to wear handcuffs outside my cell for over seven months.
It is a state that quite openly marginalizes and separates people because of their sexuality or gender.
