The Trump administration proposed an 83% reduction in funding for tribal colleges and universities, imperiling all 37 TCUs in the United States and raising concerns about institutional closures. TCU leaders and supporters emphasized federal trust responsibilities and the colleges' contributions to the national economy while confronting sudden financial uncertainty. On Sept. 15, the Department of Education announced a one-time $495 million investment for HBCUs and TCUs that would effectively double TCU funding. The department stated the funds would be reallocated from programs it labeled "ineffective and discriminatory" and "not in the best interest of students and families." Leaders reported widespread anxiety among staff and students and described leadership efforts to absorb and manage community panic.
