Sean Byrne's 'Dangerous Animals' creatively subverts the killer shark genre by positioning a human killer as the main antagonist, utilizing the shark as a mere tool for terror. Jai Courtney plays Tucker, an unsettling character who abducts surfers for his shark-infested escapades. Unlike typical horror heroines, Zephyr, played by Hassie Harrison, quickly takes charge of her grim situation. The film, which is cleverly timed with the 50th anniversary of 'Jaws', offers a unique blend of tension, dark humor, and a critique of genre conventions, proving to be a refreshing addition to the horror landscape.
Despite arriving just in time for the 50th anniversary of Jaws, Dangerous Animals has less in common with it and is more in line with Texas Chainsaw Massacre or Saw.
At 90 minutes, Dangerous Animals is lean and mean fun. Zephyr is no damsel in distress, and quickly plots an escape from what looks like an impossible situation.
