Report: Lakers told Luka Doncic they were selling the team, but not LeBron James
Briefly

LeBron James has been with the Lakers for seven years, winning a championship, and opted into his player option for the 2025-26 season. His agent, Rich Paul, clarified that LeBron is not requesting a trade, amid speculation regarding his future. The Lakers seem to be prioritizing younger talent like Luka Dončić, illustrated by the contrasting treatment during the sale of the franchise. Luka was informed beforehand, while LeBron learned along with the public, suggesting a possible shift in the organization’s focus away from LeBron.
Ramona Shelburne reported that Luka was told about the sale of the Lakers, while LeBron found out when everyone else did. When the Buss family agreed to sell a majority stake in the franchise to Mark Walter on June 18, Doncic was given a heads-up and notably posted a congratulations on social media afterward. James was not given the same notice and did not post any public acknowledgement afterward.
LeBron James just opted into his player option for the 2025-26 season, indicating his commitment to the Lakers for the near future.
