"Globalise the intifada: Non-violent resistance. End Israel's occupation of Gaza & West Bank."
"The police allegation is nonsense. My placard was not threatening or abusive and did not mention anyone's race."
"The police are "suppressing free speech" by arresting him and called it the "latest example of officers restricting and criminalising peaceful protests"."
Peter Tatchell, 74, was arrested in Aldwych during a Palestine Solidarity Campaign march on 31 January for holding a placard reading "Globalise the intifada: Non-violent resistance. End Israel's occupation of Gaza & West Bank." The arrest was reported as his 104th detention during nearly 60 decades of human rights activism. "Intifada" is an Arabic word meaning "uprising" or "shaking off" referring to Palestinian resistance against Israeli occupation. The slogan became controversial after the October 7, 2023 Gaza war and the Bondi Beach shooting on 14 December 2025. Supporters describe "globalise" as solidarity and awareness-raising, while some Jewish groups view the phrase as calling for violence. Tatchell said police were suppressing free speech and denied the placard was threatening; police alleged the wording breached the law.
