Architects debut tiny-lot home designs to solve housing shortage
Briefly

The Small Lots, Big Impacts design competition, launched by CityLab-UCLA, encourages creative housing solutions for 24,000 small vacant lots in Los Angeles. Twenty-one winners proposed designs for single-family and multifamily units on lots of a quarter-acre or less. The designs aim to address residents' concerns about density while maximizing space efficiency. Noteworthy winners include Shared Steps, with multiple dwellings disguised as a single home, and Ladderblock, which allows flexible expansion over time. The initiative hopes to stimulate private development on underutilized land in the city.
"The goal in conceptualizing these designs is to assuage neighbors' concerns about multiple homes popping up on one lot."
"Shared Steps, designed by Word and Studio Staggs Kennedy, innovates with stealth density, making three buildings appear as a single-family home."
