Blue Jays prospect Micah Bucknam is working to understand 'the why' of pitching
"Understanding the why behind what you're doing. I'm very cerebral. The way I think is like, I don't want somebody to just tell me, 'Hey, this is what you should do.' I want to understand, 'OK, why are you doing this?' "
"And for me, if I understand the why, I have more conviction behind what I'm doing. And I believe this, with my whole heart, if you have more conviction behind something, you're going to have more success at it."
Micah Bucknam is a 22-year-old right-handed pitcher from Abbotsford, B.C., selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the fourth round of the 2025 MLB Draft. He balances rigorous physical training with near-daily mental work, including scouting, visualization, and reading The Mental ABC's of Pitching. He values maximizing offseason downtime, rest, recovery, family time and learning the psychology of high-pressure situations. Incorporation of data and technology with pitching coach Cale Johnson at Dallas Baptist led to major improvements compared with his LSU performance. He prioritizes understanding the rationale behind adjustments to build conviction and improve outcomes.
