Major brands such as Verizon, Amazon, and Popeyes were found to have ads running on XShorts, a video app suitable for ages 13 and up. Despite its popularity, the app contained sexually suggestive and racially offensive content. Following an investigation, Google concluded that XShorts violated its advertising policies and prevented the app from monetizing. This prompted further scrutiny into the app, revealing that well-known brands had unknowingly funded objectionable content through various ad servers, raising significant concerns over brand safety in digital advertising.
In a statement, a Google spokesperson said: "We blocked the XShorts app's ability to monetize."
