Legacy News Outlet Tells Hundreds To Work From Home On Wednesday, Cuts 300 Jobs In Zoom Meeting
"I'm heartbroken to announce that I've been laid off from my position at The Washington Post. Working at this newspaper, and especially being a foreign correspondent covering Iran and Turkey over the last few short months, was a dream come true for me."
"Some personal news: I'm among today's @washingtonpost layoffs. It was a dream 11-year run as an investigative reporter focused on sports-making billionaires tremble (or at least mildly annoying them and their lawyers),"
"'First, we will be closing the Sports department in its current form.' - Matt Murray, editor of the Post."
"I'm out, along with just a ton of the best in the biz. Horrible."
The Washington Post terminated roughly 300 employees, amounting to nearly one-third of staff, and eliminated the sports section, books section, and the Post Reports podcast. Executive editor Matt Murray and HR director Wayne Connell instructed employees to work from home and attend a Zoom webinar where the changes were announced. Several affected journalists posted layoff notices on X, including foreign correspondent Yeganeh Torbati and sports columnists Barry Svrluga and Will Hobson. Reporters described shock and heartbreak, noting long tenure and investigative work. Race and ethnicity reporter Emmanuel Felton called the move ideological, saying it contradicted earlier statements that race coverage drove subscriptions.
