"The Washington Post will reportedly eliminate its sports section, make deep cuts to its local coverage, and get rid of its books section on Wednesday, amid layoffs that may hit 300 people across departments. The downsizing represents "yet another blow to a newsroom that has already been pushed to its limits and a disservice to the readers who rely on The Post for rigorous, independent journalism," the Washington-Baltimore News Guild said in a statement."
"Amazon founder Jeff Bezos bought the Post in 2013 and initially lavished it with funding and ambition, but his bullishness on the paper has receded during President Trump's second term. Publisher Will Lewis said in 2024 that the paper had lost more than $177 million in the previous two years, a situation that wasn't helped by Bezos yanking the editorial board's endorsement of Kamala Harris and restructuring of its opinion section, which now leans rightward."
The Washington Post will eliminate its sports section, reduce local coverage, and discontinue its books section, with layoffs that could affect up to 300 employees across departments. The Washington-Baltimore News Guild said the downsizing represents "yet another blow to a newsroom that has already been pushed to its limits and a disservice to the readers who rely on The Post for rigorous, independent journalism." Amazon founder Jeff Bezos bought the Post in 2013 and initially funded it heavily, but his bullishness receded during President Trump's second term. Publisher Will Lewis said in 2024 that the paper lost more than $177 million in the previous two years, a decline worsened by Bezos pulling the editorial board's endorsement of Kamala Harris and restructuring the opinion section toward the right. Subscribers fled, and NPR reports subscriptions are "far below" a prior high-water mark of 3 million. Washingtonian's editorial staff is also represented by the Washington-Baltimore News Guild.
