Apple slams European Commission tech fines as 'political' and calls for repeal of EU Digital Markets Act
""The DMA should be repealed while a more appropriate fit for purpose legislative instrument is put in place," Apple said in its formal submission."
""If the DMA is not repealed, enforcement should be undertaken by an independent European agency, separate from the European Commission, shielded from political interference and able to ensure a predictable, equitable, balanced, and text-based application of the DMA that respects fundamental rights.""
""Apple calls for a fundamental review as to whether the European Commission meets the criteria of an independent authority in the context of DMA enforcement," its submission said. "The [Commission] has been highly responsive to external pressures, even going so far as to encourage complaints and work hand-in-hand with third-parties to support their campaign against Apple and its users. Enforcement shoul"
Apple says the EU Digital Markets Act prevents it from launching features such as Live Translation and iPhone Mirroring in the European Union due to privacy and security constraints tied to the law. Apple claims the DMA also blocks rollout of other services and says the European Commission is not an impartial enforcer, alleging responsiveness to external political pressure and coordination with third parties against Apple. Apple notes a €500m fine for App Store subscription practices and urges repeal of the DMA or creation of an independent European enforcement agency insulated from political interference to ensure predictable, rights-respecting application.
