The first ever Puerto Rican Day celebration in Staten Island, the Boricua Culture Fest, attracted hundreds to Snug Harbor Cultural Center. Initially a simple barbecue, the fest emerged from a Facebook group effort to highlight the borough's 40,000 Puerto Rican residents. Founder Marjorie Garcia aimed to showcase Puerto Rican culture amidst the mixed community. Collaborating with local entertainment partners and supported by Maker Park Radio, the fest featured music and dancing, underscoring the joy and significance of cultural unity. The enthusiastic turnout exceeded organizers' expectations, reflecting strong community spirit and involvement.
"There are no Puerto Rican neighborhoods on Staten Island; the community is mixed in with other cultures. So, we thought we'd all hang out together for everyone to enjoy Puerto Rican culture."
"I just wanted to help get this going; it's culturally significant. It's great to see everyone come out to enjoy something positive. The turnout exceeded my expectations."
