STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - All this talk of pancakes for Shrove Tuesday has me hungry for them, so here is my handy‑dandy list of pancake how‑to enjoy pancakes on Staten Island. For the record, an occupational hazard of food writing is that you are constantly stoking your own appetite. So now that I am craving a straight‑up pancake with an irresponsible amount of butter -thinking Kerrygold-and making my stomach even grumblier.
According to a social media post from the 120th Precinct, additional officers were brought in from other boroughs to Staten Island to assist with patrols over the weekend. This increase in manpower is in response to a series of break-ins this month that are specifically targeting residences with high-end vehicles parked in the driveway. The perpetrators have been nicknamed the "Crowbar Crew" by District Attorney Michael E. McMahon because of the tool's prominence in the break-ins.
Christopher T. Hewitt, a lifelong Staten Islander who fed, cared for, and quietly held up his community through decades in the food business, died suddenly at his home in Sunnyside. He was 50. Hewitt's path into food began in the produce department of the old A&P in New Dorp, where he worked as a teenager. He went on to spend years on the East Shore at Delfini's and Top Tomato, gaining the hands-on experience that shaped his career, particularly at Delfini's. In the early 2000s, he owned The Misty Lounge, a Grant City neighborhood bar he ran with friends.
On Staten Island, Shrove Tuesday is a chance to celebrate with neighbors and friends before the hush of Lent settles over the borough. But the tradition has grown surprisingly scarce. This year, based on my research, only three congregations are firing up their griddles for the pre‑Lenten ritual-all free, with freewill donations accepted-serving pancakes, sausage, and the kind of fellowship that has defined the day for generations.
According to Malliotakis, the largest amount of money - $5 million - will go toward renovating a building on Staten Island that will be used for EMS classroom training. The exact location was not immediately clear. Currently, personnel must travel to either Randall's Island or northeastern Queens for training, requiring them to be placed out of service and unavailable for duty during those sessions.
It's a familiar scene at a youth sports event: a parent disagrees with a call or is unhappy with their child's time on the field, or perhaps they are unhappy with another player, and they loudly voice their opinion to the coach or the referee, or even another parent. Things turn heated quickly, interrupting the game, embarrassing the children, and generally causing discomfort all around.
Police on Staten Island are investigating after a man was killed after apparently being mauled to death by his roommate's dog. Officers from the 122nd Precinct rushed to 608 New Dorp Lane, near Miller Field in New Dorp, just after 4 p.m. on Jan. 18 after receiving a 911 call reporting a vicious animal attack. Upon arrival, cops discovered the victim, a 59-year-old man, who was unconscious and unresponsive, covered in blood with dog bites across his entire body.
A 66-year-old man died on Sunday after getting hit by an SUV driver on Staten Island a week earlier, the NYPD announced on Wednesday. Cops say they responded to a 911 call of the man whom they identified as Staten Island resident Jean Victorin getting struck on South Avenue near Forest Avenue within the NYPD's 121st Precinct at 1:54 p.m. on Jan. 4.
Right now is an opportunity for me to introduce myself as I am, and the focus of what my administration will be. Because it's very much in line with what many Staten Islanders care deeply about - which is not only their ability to afford to live in New York City, but also build a life in New York City.
"One of our slogans is, home is not a place, it's a feeling. We want to embody that in every coffee shop that we've opened," Ocampo Kastanis said. "I came from a fashion background, so I knew what I wanted. I ran with the aesthetics of the place. I wanted black and white themes. I wanted the gold trimmings."
Even as thousands of New Yorkers gobble up turkey on their Thanksgiving dinner plates, wild turkeys are thriving in the city's urban wildlife landscape. Native to North America, turkeys live throughout the city, scouting out habitats that have tall trees and delicious treats, such as, well, bugs. Wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo) are flockin' around NYC. Much of that avian action takes place on Staten Island, mostly to the delight, but sometimes to the dismay, of local residents who talked turkey with amNewYork.

While this kind of driving isn't uncommon on Staten Island, it doesn't make it any less dangerous. Recently submitted dash cam footage shows one driver who thought they didn't need to stop at a red light on one of the busiest roads on the North Shore. The video, submitted to the Advance/SILive.com, shows a car approaching a red light on Richmond Terrace near the intersection of North Burgher Avenue in West Brighton right before the evening rush hour on Thursday, Oct. 2.
