"The vigil was attended by religious leaders like Bishop Dr. Boyde Singletary and several police officers who had befriended the family since the child's death. Together, they marked the somber occasion by releasing balloons into the evening sky."
A 16-year-old, Evette Jeffrey, was killed by a stray bullet in the Bronx outside Bronx Career and College Preparatory High School. One year after her death, her mother, aunt, cousin, and friends returned to the location with balloons, photographs, and stuffed animals. April 13 would have been her 17th birthday, but she will remain 16. Family members described ongoing grief and disbelief, saying time does not make the loss feel better. The vigil included religious leaders and police officers who had befriended the family, and participants released balloons into the evening sky to mark the occasion.
