A Citizens Budget Commission survey reveals that New Yorkers rate their quality of life worsely than before the pandemic, with only 34% describing it as good or excellent. This is a significant drop from 51% in 2017, indicating deep dissatisfaction primarily related to public safety and city services. While there have been some improvements since 2023, the challenges ahead for the next mayor are clear, particularly regarding perceptions among minority communities in the Bronx. The CBC emphasizes that enhancing New York's appeal requires restoring confidence in living conditions.
Just over a third of residents rated the quality of life in the five boroughs as good or excellent, down significantly from 2017 when nearly half felt that way.
New Yorkers remain much more dissatisfied with quality of life, City services, and public safety than they were before the pandemic, according to the CBC.
In the analysis of the survey, the CBC noted that particularly troubling is the high level of dissatisfaction among Bronx residents and Black and Hispanic New Yorkers.
To ensure New York City remains competitive and attractive to residents and businesses, there needs to be an improvement in the overall perception of life in the city.
