Developers Charney Companies and Tavros Capital have introduced a new residential project at 175 3rd Street in Gowanus, featuring over 1,000 apartments, including 250 affordable units. The design, crafted by Bjarke Ingels Group and dencityworks|architecture, includes a series of concrete and glass towers that rise up to 27 stories. The project aims to respect the industrial context of the area while introducing an original form with sharp angles and gridded facades, offering a striking new silhouette against historic landmarks nearby.
Charney principal Sam Charney emphasized the design's ambition to respect the industrial landscape, describing the buildings as appearing 'chiseled out of rock', contrasting with the previous red-brick proposal.
The project will feature over 1,000 apartments, including roughly 250 designated as affordable, while the towering buildings will rise to a height of 27 stories.
The previous design for the site has been replaced with an elegant and original form, marked by gridded facades and exposed structural elements to create a striking silhouette.
Developers unveiled renderings for a massive residential project that redefines the Gowanus skyline, ensuring more height and density compared to earlier plans.
