"What's he doing down there?"
"I have two kids in the house. And I don't know what is happening. I don't know if this person is building a bomb. I don't know if he's cutting wires. I don't know if he has a tunnel or what can he get in my house?"
A man lifted a manhole cover in Dyker Heights at about 8:30 p.m. and descended into the sewer. He remained underground until roughly 2 a.m., about five hours later. Neighbors recorded the incident on video and reported calling police, but officers were gone by the time he resurfaced. Nearby residents expressed concern about safety risks to homes and children, citing possibilities such as tampering with wires, tunneling, or other hazards. News 12 reached out to the Department of Environmental Protection and awaited a response. Police stated they are still searching for the suspect.
