2.1M Students Left Higher Ed Without a Degree Last Year
Briefly

A recent report from the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center reveals a 2.2% growth in the number of adults in the U.S. with some college credits but no credential from 2022-23 to 2023-24. This indicates a troubling trend in higher education, where more students leave without completing their degrees than those who return to earn them. While 2.1 million students departed without credentials, re-enrollment rates have shown a positive increase, with over a million returning to complete their education in the last year.
"It's clear that higher education regularly produces more students leaving without a credential than students returning and earning one," said Matthew Holsapple, senior director of research at the NSCRC.
"Between January 2022 and July 2023, approximately 2.1 million students left college without a credential, which was a decrease of 156,000 students compared to the same period starting one year prior."
