Transfer students, especially those from nontraditional backgrounds, struggle with integrating into new colleges due to inadequate support services for social and academic integration. A 2020 survey revealed fewer than 20% of colleges provide sufficient social services tailored for these students. Indiana University Indianapolis has initiated a specialized orientation called Transfer Bridge, aimed at helping transfer and adult learners build connections and confidence as they transition. With around 30% of its undergraduates being transfers, this program targets the diverse needs of students including those with military backgrounds or parenting responsibilities, emphasizing the importance of relationships in educational success.
Despite having previous experience in higher education, transfer students-particularly those from nontraditional backgrounds-can find it difficult to navigate student supports, build community and get engaged.
The core of Transfer Bridge is creating and maintaining relationships. We all need relationships to survive as humans, and we certainly need relationships to thrive as students.
