Steven Oldrid, a resident of Gabriel House, survived a fire that resulted in 10 deaths and many injuries. Oldrid's lawsuit claims the facility was poorly managed and not adequately supervised, especially on the day of the fire. As a resident dependent on a wheelchair, he was unable to evacuate without assistance when the emergency occurred. His attorney pointed out the complexities of the evacuation plan which failed the residents, particularly Oldrid, during the incident. He suffered severe injuries as a result of being trapped in his room during the fire.
"One of our biggest things here is the evacuation plan... My client was in a power chair. He was not capable of walking across a room."
"Essentially, the signage told residents to close their doors and stay in their rooms 'until somebody comes to get you.' That's not a good warning."
