The Orange County Commission unanimously voted to allocate $5 million towards a memorial for the Pulse shooting victims, part of Orlando's plan to create a reflective space honoring the 49 individuals killed. The announcement, made by Mayor Jerry Demings and City Commissioner Patty Sheehan, emphasizes the importance of remembering all communities affected by the tragedy, including LGBTQ, LatinX, and straight allies. The funding marks a significant step forward in a long-awaited project, aiming to bring healing to the survivors and families of those lost.
None of us thought that it would take nine years to get to this point and we can't go back and relitigate all of the failures along the way that have happened, but what we can do is control how we move forward together.
You have an opportunity to be part of the healing. This didn't just impact the gay community. There were members of the LatinX community, the African-American community, there were straight allies who were murdered that day.
