Scientists warn popular health drinks flooding our fridges are killers
Briefly

Recent research suggests that protein shakes, often perceived as healthy, could be as harmful as junk food. Directed by scientists at Brazil's Oswaldo Cruz Foundation, the study links the consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) like protein shakes to increased risks of heart disease and early mortality. UPFs, significantly altered from their natural state, could raise mortality risk which aligns with findings that a ten percent rise in UPF calories correlates with a 2.7 percent increase in early death risk. The study analyzed data from several long-term studies examining dietary impacts.
High consumption of ultra processed foods leads to an increased risk of several noncommunicable diseases and all-cause mortality.
For every 10 percent increase in calories from UPFs per day, the risk of dying early from any cause increased by 2.7 percent.
