Techno-optimists in Silicon Valley highlight the bright future promised by technology, yet they often overlook its potential for creating new problems. While technology and science are valuable assets, a naive belief in technological solutions leads to temporary gains and long-term issues. Anthropologist Sander van der Leeuwe suggests that when addressing problems, we develop simplified models that guide our technological solutions. However, these models are incomplete and result in unforeseen consequences, as they fail to account for the complexities of the world around us. A more cautious approach is essential for better outcomes with technology.
When we face a problem, we think about it and build a conceptual model of how part of the world works. We use it to propose a solution to our problem.
Our simple model left some things out. Not surprisingly, it then turns out that our technology, operating in the real world, has effects on that world that we hadn't foreseen.
We repeatedly encounter this pattern because simple models are so powerful, seductive and useful. Also, simple models leave details out so that we always misperceive the full consequences of our actions.
Getting the best out of technology requires a more cautious and balanced approach.
