Israel participation not on Fifa agenda
"Israel's participation in football has not been included on the agenda for a Fifa council meeting in Zurich on Thursday. The meeting of Fifa's main decision-making body comes amid mounting pressure on football authorities to sanction Israel after a United Nations commission of inquiry concluded last month that Israel has committed genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. Although the issue is not on the agenda, it could be discussed under 'miscellaneous'."
"Amnesty International is the latest body to urge Fifa, which organises the World Cup, and Uefa, which organises European competitions, to suspend the Israeli Football Association (IFA) from their tournaments. Fifa vice-president Victor Montagliani has said Uefa should make the decision. "First and foremost, [Israel] is a member of Uefa, no different than I have to deal with a member of my region for whatever reason. They have to deal with that," he said."
Fifa's council meeting in Zurich did not include Israel's participation in football on the formal agenda, though the matter could be raised under 'miscellaneous'. A UN commission concluded that Israel committed genocide against Palestinians in Gaza, prompting calls from a UN human rights panel and Amnesty International for Fifa and Uefa to suspend the Israeli Football Association. Israel's national team competes in Uefa World Cup qualifiers and Maccabi Tel Aviv plays in the Europa League. Fifa vice-president Victor Montagliani said Uefa should decide on suspension. The US administration pledged to oppose attempts to block Israel from participation.
