O'Neill unmoved by Nagelsmann's 'long ball' remark
"It not easy to defend a lot of long balls and not easy to defend a lot of second balls."
"I don't put respectful or disrespectful on any of that."
"I watched the game back. I didn't really read the comments, it is something like long balls or something, but Germany played a lot of long balls too."
Germany beat Northern Ireland 3-1 in Cologne during World Cup qualifying, with goals from Nadiem Amiri and Florian Wirtz sealing the win after an equaliser from Isaac Price. Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann described Northern Ireland's style as "not brilliant to watch" and highlighted the difficulty of defending long balls and second balls. Northern Ireland manager Michael O'Neill rejected framing the remarks as respectful or disrespectful and noted Germany played many long balls as well. O'Neill plans to set his team up similarly when Germany visit Belfast, with fixtures also including a match against Slovakia beforehand.
