City officials in San Jose have agreed to pay $620,000 to settle a civil rights lawsuit connected to injuries sustained by protesters during the summer 2020 protests against police brutality. The lawsuit was filed by several organizations including the NAACP and involved incidents such as the injury of Derrick Sanderlin, who was shot by police with a less lethal projectile. The settlement concludes all pending lawsuits, with Sanderlin receiving $500,000 alongside other community members who were also injured. San Jose city officials opted for a settlement rather than facing potential embarrassment and liability in court.
City officials are paying out more than half-a-million dollars after officers injured protesters rallying against police brutality in summer 2020.
San Jose settled the matter out of court, after Ninth Circuit Court Judge Jacqueline Nguyen said the officer intended to restrain Sanderlin with the projectile.
Sanderlin and his partner will receive $500,000 while other community members are also compensated for their injuries.
Silicon Valley De-Bug founder Raj Jayadev emphasized the city's decision to settle was to avoid embarrassment over liability for harming its residents.
