"Me, 100% I was driving dangerous and recklessly."
"I'm a coward for driving and leaving a poor young man to die. I was a coward. I should have stopped there and then. I panicked and had to get away."
"by the time I have swerved and engaged my brake I have accidentally hit the accelerator."
Anthony Gilheaney, 30, is on trial at the Old Bailey over a December 25, 2024 collision in London’s West End that killed 25-year-old Aidan Chapman and seriously injured four others. Gilheaney said he was drunk, had been attacked earlier, and circled back to a club to try to pick up his pregnant girlfriend. He said he looked back, swerved to avoid a moped, and accidentally hit the accelerator while intending to brake. He admitted responsibility, called himself a coward for leaving the scene, and said CCTV and dashcam footage later helped his memory. He denies murder and multiple related charges.
