A volunteer known as Batman of San José distributes water, food, and supplies to unhoused residents in downtown San José, often under Highway 87. The costume and cape draw attention and help make the volunteer recognizable and approachable to residents like Miguel and his dog Lorio. The volunteer began solo nighttime rounds in 2020 and expanded into a small mutual-aid collective. Some residents express anger at encampment clearings without permanent housing solutions and recount deaths and displacement. Mayor Matt Mahan's office said temporary shelter is being rolled out in phases and that beds exist for those displaced from Columbus Park.
