Letters: More important than cash, Prop. 50 has support of people
"The recent article pointing out that those in favor of Proposition 50 have outraised its opponents by a 2-to-1 margin is good news for those of us who are concerned about preserving our democracy. However, the 2-to-1 ratio is misleading. As the article points out, over 700,000 folks have contributed to yes on 50, while virtually all the money in opposition has come from a single billionaire. The real headline-worthy ratio is 700,000-to-1."
"Michelle Cottle properly notes the collateral damage in the ongoing gerrymandering war set off by Donald Trump's demand that Texas give him five more GOP congressional seats: the five Republican representatives endangered by California's response. She notes that Trump's unquenchable thirst for power has no regard for anybody Republican, Democrat or independent who may get in the way. Even Trump's most loyal and subservient supporters are expendable in pursuit of his goals."
Supporters of Proposition 50 received donations from over 700,000 contributors while opposition funding derived largely from a single billionaire, producing a donor ratio of roughly 700,000-to-1. The concentration of wealth in opposition motivates support for Proposition 50 to curb billionaire influence in elections. A redistricting conflict tied to Donald Trump's request for additional GOP seats threatens five Republican representatives through retaliatory gerrymandering. The proposed remedy is for Texas and California to repeal their gerrymanders and for the governors to meet at a neutral site to sign the repeals. Highway 4 in East Contra Costa remains congested despite a prior widening, with Brentwood commuters averaging 46 minutes.
