Suspect in murder of Charlie Kirk makes his first court appearance
"The proceedings before district court judge Tony Graf went into closed session shortly after starting. The public, including Mr Robinson's relatives, were asked to leave temporarily, and a video feed was shut off. During the closed session, Judge Graf and the attorneys were to discuss what could be made public from previous closed sessions. The judge, who is weighing a request from Mr Robinson's lawyers to ban cameras from the courtroom, said he would rule on the access questions later yesterday."
"The judge ruled Mr Robinson could appear in court in regular clothes, but must be physically restrained. Judge Graf prohibited media from filming or photographing Mr Robinson's handcuffs and shackles after his lawyers said images of him restrained could prejudice jurors."
Tyler Robinson appeared in a Provo courtroom wearing a dress shirt and striped tie, handcuffed and shackled, and spoke with his lawyers. His parents and brother attended and his mother wiped away tears. Local television showed an armoured SWAT truck in the convoy that brought Robinson to the courthouse about 6km from where Kirk was shot on September 10. Proceedings moved into a closed session while Judge Tony Graf and attorneys discussed what could be made public and whether cameras should be banned. Robinson is accused of firing a single rooftop round that killed Kirk during a Turning Point USA event at Utah Valley University as Kirk debated with students. The judge has issued rulings to protect Robinson’s presumption of innocence, allowing regular clothes but requiring restraints and barring images of his shackles.
