Trump administration sues New York City over its 'sanctuary city' policies
Briefly

The Justice Department filed a lawsuit against New York City's sanctuary city policies, claiming they obstruct federal immigration enforcement. The suit comes after the Trump administration's criticism of these policies, linking them to rising crime rates. Attorney General Pam Bondi stated that NYC's policies have allowed many criminals to avoid deportation. In response, Mayor Eric Adams emphasized the importance of safety and support for local laws, yet acknowledged the need for review to address violent crime effectively. He suggested reexamining these policies for better collaboration with federal authorities to enhance public safety.
"New York City has released thousands of criminals on the streets to commit violent crimes against law-abiding citizens due to sanctuary city policies," Attorney General Pam Bondi said in the Justice Department statement.
"Keeping New Yorkers safe also means making sure they feel safe, and we have been clear: no one should be afraid to dial 911, send their kids to school, or go to the hospital, and no New Yorker should feel forced to hide in the shadows," Adams said.
Adams believes "they go too far when it comes to dealing with those violent criminals on our streets," and urged the city council to reexamine the policies."
