The Trump administration has filed a lawsuit against New York City, claiming that its sanctuary policies are obstructing enforcement of federal immigration laws. These policies are alleged to have contributed to the recent shooting of a Customs and Border Protection officer. The lawsuit targets city leaders, including Mayor Eric Adams, and accuses the city of releasing individuals who could potentially commit violent crimes. Attorney General Pamela Bondi emphasizes the need for New York City to prioritize public safety over its sanctuary policies.
"New York City has released thousands of criminals on the streets to commit violent crimes against law-abiding citizens due to sanctuary city policies," Attorney General Pamela Bondi said.
The lawsuit also targets policies that include barring city law enforcement from honoring civil immigration detainers by holding people in custody past their release date.
Kayla Mamelak Altus, a spokesperson for Adams, said the mayor supports the essence of the city's policies but has urged the City Council to reexamine them.
The Trump administration's lawsuit against New York City is part of a series of suits targeting state or city policies seen as hindering immigration enforcement.
