Commanders camp just started but one rookie is winning his job early
Briefly

Trey Amos, the second-round pick by the Washington Commanders, is emerging as a frontrunner for a starting position in the team's defense. His standout performances in the offseason and training camp have been noted, including impactful plays such as an interception and a key pass breakup. The Commanders have high expectations for their cornerback unit in 2025, strengthened by healthy players and new additions. Coach Dan Quinn emphasizes hard work and competition, indicating that rookies must earn their positions rather than being handed spots.
Amos caught the eye constantly throughout Washington's offseason program. He hasn't taken his foot off the gas at training camp, leading Zach Selby from the team's website to suggest the starting boundary spot opposite Marshon Lattimore is the Ole Miss product's to lose right now.
[Trey] Amos, the team's second-round pick in this year's draft, has spent most of his time with the starting defense and locked down several of the team's receivers. He had an impressive pass breakup against Luke McCaffrey at the goal line on Thursday and grabbed an interception off [Jayden] Daniels, although the play was ruled dead because of a flag on the defense.
The Commanders had a first-round grade on Amos in the draft process, and it is easy to see why. There's still a long way to go before the season opener, but as long as Amos keeps this up, it's his job to lose.
Expectations are much higher for the cornerback unit. This might be an area of real strength if everyone stays healthy.
