Disney 'The Power of Joy' creator makes Eisner history with 'Weirdo' nomination in kids' category
Briefly

Tony Weaver, a creator for Disney's "The Power of Joy" and author of the acclaimed novel "Weirdo," has earned a Will Eisner Comic Industry Award nomination. If victorious, he will be the first Black creator to win the Best Publication for Kids award. Weaver's path to success was shaped by childhood bullying and personal struggles with mental health, which he overcame through storytelling. His experiences led him to create "Weird Enough Productions," where he engages with young audiences through social media and workshops focused on mental health and self-love.
People told me I was out of place, that I was unorthodox. And those are the types of words and feelings that I started to associate with myself.
In that dark moment, the things that saved me were stories -- comic books, manga, anime, video games. Seeing all these different characters fight their trials and tribulations made me feel like I could, too.
For Weaver, this work reconciles where he's been with his mental health journey and how he wants to help other young people with theirs.
