Only 1.2% of over one billion Africans have access to 5G networks: Report
"Only 1.2 percent of Africans currently have access to 5G networks compared with a global average of more than 20 percent, a sign that the continent remains at an early stage in accessing next-generation mobile technology, according to a new report from the International Telecommunication Union and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The State of Broadband in Africa 2025 report says that while Africa has made strong progress in mobile connectivity,"
"However, there is still a significant usage gap, with 710 million Africans not using the internet despite living in an area served by mobile broadband infrastructure, it adds. Key barriers, it says, remain affordability of handsets and lack of digital skills. Chinese companies like Huawei, with more competitively priced products, have been able to establish a strong presence as a result across Africa."
Africa currently has only 1.2 percent 5G access versus a global average above 20 percent, placing the continent at an early stage for next-generation mobile technology. Industry projections estimate 5G penetration could reach 17 percent by 2030, but rollout remains slow compared with previous mobile-generation gains. Present coverage includes 3G reaching 77 percent of the population and 4G covering 44.3 percent. A usage gap persists with 710 million people not using the internet despite coverage. Key barriers include handset affordability and lack of digital skills, while competitively priced Chinese vendors have established substantial market presence. Technology mix in sub-Saharan Africa still favors 3G and 4G.
