Construction of St Paul's new public square to start next year
"As part of a remodelling of the roads in the area to remove the gyratory, the plans will see one side of the gyratory pedestrianised and apart from creating a new public space larger than the successful creation of Aldgate Square in 2018, will also remove a traffic island where pedestrians need to cross two roads to get east/west in the area."
"The concept by LDA Design has undergone some revisions, but in essence, will merge the church site with the new square by removing the boundary walls added in 1990, and highlighting the church by embedding history signs in the ground. They will also be reusing some granite stones salvaged from the rebuilding of the Thames Embankment at Blackfriars to display short paragraphs on nearby subjects of interest - such as Marconi's first telegraph, archaeological findings, Stinking Lane, Christchurch Greyfriars, and the lost Post Office station."
The City of London approved a final design for a new public square near St Paul's Cathedral that will transform part of the St Paul's gyratory. The scheme pedestrianises one side of the roundabout, creating a public space larger than Aldgate Square and removing a traffic island that forces pedestrians to cross two roads. The design merges Christchurch Greyfriars ruins with the new square by removing boundary walls and embedding history signs in the ground. Granite salvaged from Blackfriars will display short informational paragraphs on nearby subjects. The area will be mainly paved with raised planting blocks, seating, benches, tables, and improved visibility for the Newgate Street Clock.
