"I'm big on saving design DIYs from Instagram, but my "saved it" to "tried it" ratio is generally low. One recent exception is the frame mat hack that you've almost certainly seen all over Instagram and TikTok. Whether they're using wallpaper or wrapping paper, everybody seems to be creating their own custom-look frames by repurposing existing frames that are hanging around the house."
"First I tried it with a leftover piece of fabric that I had from a non-DIY pillow reupholstery project. It went ... okay. The fabric was a little unwieldy to work with, didn't wrap in perfectly neat corners around the existing mat (this should not have been a surprise), and it felt bumpy after I glued it to the surface of the mat with Mod Podge."
A popular frame mat hack repurposes existing frames using wallpaper, wrapping paper, or other coverings to create custom-look frames. Two materials were tested: fabric and wallpaper. Fabric proved unwieldy, failed to wrap into neat corners, became bumpy after applying Mod Podge, and ended up too thick to fit back into the frame without taping; not recommended for this method. Wallpaper scraps, following the method more closely, were positioned as a better-suited option because of thinner profile and smoother application, making the wallpaper approach more likely to succeed for this DIY.
